Our special guest is Observer and Guardian investigative journalist, Paul Lashmar. Paul was one of the team behind recent front-page articles about our MP Richard Drax’s family fortune being derived from Slavery. Paul revealed how Richard Drax still owns the family ancestral slave plantation, Drax Hall, in Barbados. He also set out questions Richard Drax still must address about the accuracy of his entries in the House of Commons Members’ Register of Interests. A campaign is currently underway in both Barbados and Dorset urging our MP to make restitution and reparation to the people of Barbados.

Paul Lashmar is an investigative journalist and author of several well received books. Recently, he wrote the high-profile articles about Richard Drax seen in The Observer and Guardian – articles which highlighted the historic origins, of the Drax family’s wealth, being derived from slavery and that mystery surrounds the true extent of Richard Drax’s current fortune.

Paul has also publicised the campaign being mounted in Barbados, by CARICOM (the Caribbean Reparations Commission), that Drax returns to the people of Barbados, Drax Hall – his family’s ancestral slave plantation – which he still owns.

Recently, Sir Hilary Beckles, Vice Chancellor of the University of West Indies, spoke through Zoom to an audience of over 200 about the cruel history of Drax Hall – the Zoom meeting being organised by Stand Up to Racism Dorset. “No family has made so much money from slavery” Sir Hilary said – “you, Richard Drax are accountable – you have inherited your wealth through slavery”.
